Visualization and Analysis of Big Data through 3D Environments

What is the project about?

 

Develop a user-friendly ludic web-based 3D tool for the display, edition and analysis of information on biodiversity. The tool is meant to maintain large amounts of hierarchically structured information, which will be easy to visualize, inspect, query, select and synthesize. Users could range from general public, to citizen scientists all the way to expert taxonomists and decision makers. A specialized mobile application for the general public will focus on supporting the bioliteracy efforts developed in Costa Rica by the National Biodiversity Institute and the Costa Rica Institute of Technology. Therefore, it will be used to raise the level of awareness of citizens, mainly from large urban areas, about the value of biodiversity and how to understand it better, use it sustainably and preserve it.

 
Abstract

 

Information on biodiversity is commonly presented through static two dimensional maps and diagrams, which limits the amount of information that can be displayed in a digital device. The use of a 3D tool to capture, edit, store, display and synthesize large volumes of information will extend the cognitive abilities of humans to understand and analyze environmental situations and challenges.

Our goal is to model and develop a digital 3D environment that allows both to construct a classification from scratch as well as to take advantage of existing data bases, such as the ones from the Encyclopedia of Life, iNaturalist, etc. This is a visualization and analytical tool on biodiversity.

 
Objectives

 

  • Develop a 3D tool to capture, edit and visualize hierarchically structured information.
  • Use available world sources of data on biodiversity such as Encyclopedia of Life, GBIF, iNaturalist, and others.
  • Provide mechanisms to support analysis of information.
  • Develop and optimize algorithms for the proper visualization of large hierarchical structures in 3D using cone-trees.
  • Develop an experiment to validate the tool with final users.
  • Implement a specialized mobile application for the general public that will focus on supporting the bioliteracy efforts developed in Costa Rica by the National Biodiversity Institute and the Costa Rica Institute of Technology.
